A crucial part of any event is creating the perfect atmosphere to fit your event’s style and theme. Music  selection is one of the easiest ways to set the tone and enhance your event. Our favorite type here at NGE, is live music!

John Kopecky, one of our favorite acoustic guitarists, is a self-taught guitarist and has been playing since the age of 11. With years of professional experience in developing his own personal style and repertoire of pop, jazz, rock and roll and even latin music, he knows his stuff! I caught up with John to learn some tips on how establish the ideal musical atmosphere for any event!  Here are his tips:

  1. Choose a musician that fits your desired genre

It is important to identify what type of musical style or genre best suits you and your event. Is it acoustic jazz, classical music, or recorded to capture all genres? Once you have that down, do your research on what type of musician or group would be the best fit. For instance, if you envision classical music, such as Mozart and Bach, it would be best to choose a string duo or trio that has experience in that field. If you are looking for something a bit more modern, classical duos or trios aren’t always the bit fit. “If you have a classical guitarist play an Elvis song, maybe they can play it, maybe they can’t." Bottom line, do your research and choose a musician that fits the bill.

2. Band versus Solo?

John’s first job was performing in a band. He had the opportunity to play guitar with a variety of people in different settings. Although he enjoyed that part of his career, he now primarily plays solo. “Playing in a band was nice because you didn’t have to worry about the bassists piece, or the lead. But playing by yourself is also refreshing because you can rehearse at your own time.” John mentions that although a band can create a heightened ambiance, choosing a solo musician such as himself allows for a bit more flexibility on timing, piece selection, etc. Ultimately, he notes that “you should choose your musician or musicians based on how well you resonate with that individual or band.”

3. Some artists will try to only cater to their individual artistic goals first, so choose wisely.

John’s philosophy is to first and foremost cater to the audience. Some artists solely play for their individual artistic goals, but it is possible to find the balance between catering to both your audience and your personal musical repertoire. Ideally your audience should embrace your musical talent and what you play best, however, if your musician is unwilling to compromise with your ideas, perhaps it is best to look elsewhere. John suggests that you should “get to know your artist and find out if both of your musical interests match up.”

4. Adaptability is imperative.

Your artists or musician should be able to adapt to the current situation. I had the opportunity to work with John at a wedding where we had to change the location of the ceremony due to rain. He was quick and willing to adapt to the situation and still performed up to par, despite the last minute change. You shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not your musician can play your favorite piece of music with different acoustics and locations. “It is their special and important day so I am going to do everything I can to contribute to the success.” Just remember to make the best of each situation and embrace the moment in its entirety.   We love working with John for so many reasons, but if we could sum it up in a few words...he is professional, friendly, and he can play so many genres of music!  He performs for weddings, social events, corporate events, and more.
