Cocktail Recipe Series :: Spiced Old Fashioned
It's that time of the year again for spiced everything! Old Fashioned's are one of our favorite timeless cocktails, but spiced with apple + cinnamon is a nice way to modernize the cocktail with some seasonal flavors! To continue our cocktail recipe series in collaboration with Eder Photo, we're sharing a seasonal version of this classic cocktail, the Spiced Old Fashioned.
If you read our Traditional Old Fashioned recipe post, then you know that we are pretty adamant about not customizing this already unique cocktail. Although we absolutely adore the traditional recipe (and no disrespect to the creator, Mr. Pepper), if we can create ways to encourage more people to enjoy this cocktail, the better. With minor alterations, I'm not sure if this is still considered an Old-Fashioned to the die-hard mixologists out there, but hey, we're calling it one! Spiced Old Fashioned
PREP TIME: 5 Minutes COOK TIME: N/A TOTAL TIME: 5 Minutes
1 Sugar Cube
2 Thinly Sliced Apples
2 Oz. Rye or Bourbon Whiskey
1-2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
1-2 Dashes Cinnamon Bitters
1 Orange Slice
Optional: 2x2 Cubed Ice Chunk
Garnishes: Thin Apple Slices, Cinnamon Stick, Star Anise
Place sugar cube and apple slices at the bottom of a Old Fashioned or Rocks Glass.
Saturate sugar cube with Angostura and Cinnamon Bitters. A few shakes will do.
Squeeze 1 Orange Slice into glass.
Muddle sugar, apple slices, bitters, and orange together inside the glass.
Add in ice cube (optional).
Add in whiskey.
Stir well (do not shake) and garnish with apple slices, cinnamon stick, and star anise.
No sugar cube? A dash of simple syrup or agave syrup will suffice. Honey or maple syrup are too strong and sweet.
Don't exclude the bitters! Bitters are what make this drink an Old Fashioned. If you prefer another type of bitters, go for it, but keep in mind what would meld well with the spices of the cocktail.
Ice is optional. Some prefer to exclude ice to not dilute the cocktail. If you prefer ice, the larger the cubed ice, the less it will melt. Avoid any crushed ice as that will dilute the cocktail quickly.
Rye Whiskey was the original liquor choice, however, bourbon became a substitute over the years. It gets down to personal preference, so whichever you prefer!
